Background Information

In June 2019, the Open-Ended Intergovernmental Working Group on transnational corporations and other business enterprises with respect to human rights (OEIWG) will release an updated draft of the Business and Human Rights treaty and optional protocol. This version of the treaty draft will incorporate stakeholder input received during a recently concluded comment process. Over the next few months, civil society has an opportunity to engage at various levels, including ahead of the start of negotiations during the OEIGWG’s fifth session to be held in October 2019.

This workshop will focus on three civil society priorities covered by the draft treaty: mandatory human rights due diligence and corporate liability, corporate capture, and gender protections. The workshop is intended to ensure ICAR members have a clearer understanding of the process and opportunities for engagement, at the regional and international level.
