PODER and ICAR Release Comprehensive Study of Business and Human Rights Law and Policy in Mexico

ICAR is pleased to share that the Civil Society Focal Group on Business and Human Rights of Mexico has published the Mexican National Baseline Assessment on the Implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and accompanying recommendations to the Mexican government for consideration in shaping the content of the Mexican National Action Plan (NAP) on Business and Human Rights.

The National Baseline Assessment represents one of the most exhaustive studies of Mexican laws, policies, regulations, and standards that pertain to business and human rights at the national level. It will be used in the process of developing a NAP on Business and Human Rights in Mexico.

The NBA is also intended as a tool for all stakeholders, including Mexican civil society groups, academia, government representatives, business groups, and investors, to engage with, add to, and apply in their efforts to address business-related human rights harms.

The publication of these two document was the result of a year-long project between ICAR and PODER, which sought to activate and build the capacity of key partners in Mexico on NAPs on business and human rights issues, frameworks, and tools, and aid in the development of the NBA and accompanying civil society recommendations.

PODER coordinates the Civil Society Focal Group on Business and Human Rights of Mexico, which is comprised of the following organizations: Centro Mexicano de Derecho Ambiental (CEMDA), Centro de Derechos Humanos de la Montaña “Tlachinollan”, Centro de Información sobre Empresas y Derechos Humanos (CIEDH), Código DH, Oxfam México, Proyecto de Derechos Económicos, Sociales y Culturales (ProDESC), y Proyecto sobre Organización, Desarrollo, Educación e Investigación (PODER) and accompanied by the Asociación Interamericana para la Defensa del Ambiente (AIDA), Brigadas Internacionales de Paz (PBI) y Servicios y Asesoría para la Paz (Serapaz).
