ICAR Submits Open Letter to the International Labor Conference 2016

Washington, D.C. (May 31, 2016) - The International Corporate Accountability Roundtable (ICAR) sent an open letter to the ILO's International Labor Conference today, regarding the general discussion on decent work in global supply chains.

ICAR welcomes the efforts of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in organizing the upcoming International Labor Conference general discussion on decent work in global supply chains. We are encouraged to see high-level negotiations proceeding at the international level between governments, trade unions, and employers to address and work toward a legally binding international standard pertaining to the conduct of business in global supply chains. We believe that this agenda needs to be supported and further developed at the national level alongside possible developments at the ILO, and call for the integration of labor rights protections into the broader existing business and human rights developments taking place, including through National Action Plans on Business and Human Rights. ICAR urges that any legally binding international standard outline the need for governments to regulate human rights due diligence behavior of corporations, including extraterritorially; and the importance of transparency of supply chains as a means of mitigating harm and enabling redress.
