Background Information
This workshop will focus on how ICAR members and allies can effectively collaborate with and pressure investors in the course of carrying out business and human rights campaigns and other advocacy activities.
Engaging in interactive discussions and sharing experiences to date, participants will brainstorm strategies and opportunities for ICAR members and allies to: (1) tap into investors’ influence with business and government actors in furthering corporate respect for human rights, and (2) advocate for investors to better understand and fulfill their own responsibility as business actors to respect human rights under the UN Guiding Principles, OECD guidance on Responsible Business Conduct for Institutional Investors, and other relevant standards.
Framing questions for the discussion will include (but not be limited to):
Do you currently engage institutional investors as allies or as targets in your advocacy work? If so, what works and what doesn’t?
How can civil society and investors more strategically work together to promote corporate respect for human rights? What channels already exist, and where are new ones needed?
How do mandatory HRDD efforts contribute to holding investor accountable for their role in adverse human rights impacts, and how can ICAR members and allies better align and collaborate around this?
What are strategies, tools, resources, partnerships, etc. that are needed to further the investor responsibility agenda?
Participants will briefly hear from a few lead contributors at the beginning of the session and should come prepared to actively participate in a facilitated group discussion for the bulk of the session.
